The South Rim of the Park is open every day, but the South Rim road from which you can get spectacular views is only open from early April to mid-November.
Discussion A good plan for sightseeing and doing a little hiking in the area would be to drive the South Rim Park roads and see the dramatic Canyon sights there.
At the end of the park road is a short nature trail (Mark Warner trail) that focuses on the local habitat versus the Canyon itself.

To visit both sides (which is well worth doing)  involves a 2 or 3 hour scenic drive using Rt  92, which intersects Hwy 50 east of the Park.

Turn right onto the dirt road (LN 2810) just after mile marker 14 when you see the sign for the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area and the Gunnison River Pleasure Park.
