The park climbing committee and the park superintendent will review these check lists to ensure that impacts do not reach unacceptable levels.
PARK REGULATIONS:
Climbing within 50 feet of any rock-art site is prohibited.
Two areas of the park have been designated as anchor- (bolt) free zones where bolting is not permitted.
If you would like to learn more about climbing in the park, stop by the Climbers Coffee on Sunday mornings at 8:00 a.
Trails for Climbers
Years of wandering on unmarked trails amongst challenging topography, tall brush, and fragile rocky soils have lead to (in many places) a tangled mass of unnecessary trails impacting the Park's unique vegetation.
Free coffee aside, it's a great way to meet with other climbers and to discuss climbing issues, etiquette, and regulations with park rangers.
Rules for Climbing in Joshua Tree National Park
Commercial climbing instruction or filming requires a commercial use license which is available at park headquarter.
In an unprecedented conservation effort, the park has joined hands with the Access Fund and the California Native Plant Society to work with the climbing population in a project called Vegetation.
Approximately 80% of Joshua Tree National Park is designated as wilderness.
To place bolts in non-wilderness, you must complete a checklist, available at park entrance stations and visitor canters.

The Keys view road takes you to an overlook of the Palm Springs
area and the most noteworthy feature visible is the very obvious San
Andreas Fault! The park was at one time home to several ranches and
mines.
For the casual visitor the main attraction is the concentration of Joshua
Trees that grow in the park.
park has experienced tremendous interest in the last twenty years,
however, during most months the main visitors are casual tourists and rock
climbers.
Look to the left and
after 50 yards or so after the trail starts from the old dirt parking area
a break will be apparent to the left.
By parking at the
campground or off the road (if you can) you can get to Steve Canyon (pun
intended, I am sure) which is just to the northwest and is near the road
heading in the direction of Joshua Tree.
Many interesting routes may be climbed
by hiking into the desert about one half hour from the Quail Springs
picnic area parking.
There are many excellent routes in this area and is a great place
to go when the park is crowded.
The next clear turn
off spot on the road will be a left turn into the Keys Corner parking
area.
This park is a desert region and the main part of the park is situated at
an elevation of about 4000 feet.
After
years and several hundred visits to the park I have encountered about six
rattlesnakes.
In spite of this
variation I have made trips to Joshua Tree every month from November to
April for the last several years.
For camping and climbing equipment
needs try Nomad Ventures (760-366-4684) which is right near the turn off
of route 62 to the west entrance to the park in the town of Joshua Tree.
Since it is an old park and the early route developers were
ordinary people there are a large number of routes in the 5.
The road has
been re-routed here and the parking lot directly across from the Real
Hidden valley road puts you into a parking lot for access to Intersection
Rock.
The park is located off of route 62,
or the Twenty Nine Palms Highway, which leaves interstate 10 a little east
of Banning.
The climber can take advantage of the big elevation difference
between the main part of the park and Indian Cove.
Head
out on the trail to the east from the parking lot and tend to the left
past an old ranch house ruin.
The
three towns of Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twenty Nine Palms are close
to all the entrances to the park.
To get close to the park you can fly but a car will need to
be rented in order to get to the park from the nearest airports.
Now it can
be difficult to find a site anywhere in the park when arriving Thursday
night during the spring! In 1994 the monument became an official element
of the national park system.
A short
walk from the Wonderland parking area brings you to a stamp mill used to
process ore.
There are some nice routes right by the Wonderland
parking lot but the main attraction here is the Wonderland itself.
This is the loop road and traverses
the park and eventually comes out in the town of Twenty Nine Palms.
Getting to Joshua Tree National Park requires a car since there is no
transportation service inside the park and transportation to the park is
problematic.
In most places the rock is solid, however, there are parts of
the park where the rock is poor.
To the left is the road to Keys Ranch and
just off of this road is access to a huge parking area located where Echo
Tee used to be.
lower elevation is in the Indian Cove area (map of campground ) and this can represent a
significant increase in temperature compared to the main part of the park.
There is the Indian Cove area, which is distinct and disconnected
from the main part of the park.
9+, on Houser Buttress which
is straight out across the desert from the Hidden Valley Parking lot and
the Betty Jo Yablonski boulder (or top rope) problem, 5.
To the left of the parking in the Real
Hidden Valley is Turtle Rock, which has many easy and moderate routes in
the 5.
Showers may be obtained in two places in Joshua Tree, Coyote
Corner (760-366-9683) right at the turn off of route 62 to the entrance to
the park and the Safari Motel (760-366-1113).
This
doesn't mean there aren't any hard routes in the park! Take a look at
"Stingray", 5.
It does not stand out as well in the dark or at dusk
when you are cruising in from the remote reaches of the park and is very
easy to run into.
the parking is packed here it is easy to park in the new Barker Dam
parking area, however, do not hike out past Barker Dam to get to the
Wonderland.
routes in this area close to the parking area are modest and the
routes in the Grey Giant/Fortress area are a hike so allow for an early
start.
The best
place in the area is the Crossroads (760-366-5414), which is on the main
road near the west entrance to the park in Joshua Tree.
I essentially learned to climb at JTree and have wasted countless
hours of my so called life in this park climbing and hanging out with my
friends.
There are a lot
of other desert attractions here including the big horn sheep, ringtail
cat, kangaroo rat, coyote, bobcat, the super cool desert tortoise, hares
and rabbits, lizards and chuckwallas, and a variety of pack chomping mice
and other rodents.
The camping in the park itself is at Hidden
Valley, Ryan, Jumbo Rocks, Belle, White Tank, and Cottonwood.
This used to be just a wide spot on the road with parking but with
the new road going in it appears to be a turn off into a genuine paved
parking area.
It is about an hour and fifteen minutes to
Yucca Valley from this airport and maybe an hour and forty five minutes to
the central part of the park itself.

Since the park is in the high desert region, there is no surface water that
can be purified for drinking.
The park is situated in the arid mountainous
region where the Colorado Desert and Mojave Desert meet.
Rock Climbing In Joshua Tree National Park
As for me, I threw my shoes and chalkbag over my shoulder and headed
for one of the most famous bouldering traverses in the park, 'Gunsmoke'
- a 70-foot horizontal traverse rated 5.
Hmmm, I thought, then unpacked
once again, discarded all of my underwear, packed one pair of socks, a toothbrush,
one longsleave T-shirt, a pair of shorts and the rest was camping or climbing
gear.
The trees were the famous
Joshua Trees (Yucca brevifolia for all of you scientific types) for which
the park is named.
With the bike and camping gear packed, all I needed was to finish my
last day at work and get to the airport.
feeling like a combination between Houdini and Merlin the
Magician, I had performed the impossible - I had managed to get all of my
gear into one small backpack.
with the sun, gone with the wind, I really think I am CRAZY"
to quote a Bob Segar song, with my own variation, I got up early and stopped
by the Circle K for some last minute groceries (10 packs of Ramen Soup and
two gallons of water).
In adventure travel there are multiple challenges, and my first challenge
was to pack a 2400 cubic inch capacity backpack with at least 5000 cubic
inches of gear.
I arrived at the West Entrance
to find a guard who charged me $5 for a seven-day pass, and camping is free
within the park.
My trip to Joshua Tree began as most of my trips begin, with much stress
and preparation in order to go on an adventure (not a vacation).
Fourteen hours and 132 miles later, I arrived at the town of Joshua Tree,
which is six miles from the park entrance.
Water is the most important requirement for entry
into the park, as Joshua Tree National Park campgrounds do not have water.
Tree Climbing
by Adam Chambers
Publication Date: Joshua Tree National Park is located in South/Central California about
two hours east of Los Angeles.
I packed and unpacked, then repacked
with less gear, then unpacked again, looking seriously at each piece of
clothing or camping gear as I placed it back into my backpack.
